Composite resin bonding

What you can expect

Composite resin bonding is one of the most conservative aesthetic treatments we offer and when done well, capable of beautifully subtle results.

Bonding uses tooth-coloured material to refine small imperfections — chips, gaps, worn edges, uneven shapes or minor discolouration — while preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. Often the most conservative aesthetic option, bonding is sculpted directly onto the tooth with precision, artistry and attention to detail while minimising alteration to the natural tooth.

A conservative approach to refinement

Bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite material to repair or refine minor imperfections in the smile.

It can address chips, small gaps, worn or uneven edges, minor discolouration and slight areas of damage — situations where a full restoration would be unnecessary, but where careful refinement can make a meaningful difference.

What sets bonding apart is how little it demands of the tooth. In many cases, very little or no preparation is required, preserving your natural enamel. This aligns with our broader philosophy at Hygge Dental — to achieve balanced aesthetic outcomes while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

The craft is in the detail

The craft sits in the hand.

Composite is sculpted directly onto the tooth, shaped and layered in real time and shade-matched to blend seamlessly with the surrounding enamel. Texture, translucency, contour and the way the material catches light are all built up by hand, so the clinician’s eye and skill shape the quality of the result. At Hygge Dental, every bonding case is treated as a small-scale craft.

Bonding can be a beautiful treatment on its own, or a quiet refinement within a broader Digital Smile Design plan. It’s an option to consider for guests who want a discernible improvement without committing to more extensive treatment — though it does require some care and maintenance over time, and isn’t always the right option for every tooth or goal. As with all aesthetic treatments, we’ll carefully assess your smile and recommend the approach that supports both your goals and long-term oral health.

FAQs

Let’s answer some frequently asked questions.

Composite resin bonding can provide a durable aesthetic improvement when it’s properly planned and maintained. However, composite resin is not as strong or stain-resistant as porcelain, and it may require polishing, repair or replacement over time.

Longevity depends on your bite, habits, oral hygiene, diet and the size and location of the bonding.

The composite resin shade is selected to blend with your surrounding teeth. Your dentist will consider tooth colour, translucency, surface texture and shape when planning the bonding.

If you’re considering whitening, it’s usually discussed before bonding because composite resin doesn’t whiten the same way as natural enamel.

In most cases, you can resume normal eating and drinking soon after composite bonding. However, you may be advised to avoid biting very hard foods directly on the bonded edges and to limit staining foods and drinks immediately after treatment.

Your dentist will provide care instructions based on the area treated.
